Have you heard the buzz and felt the energy that is growing in downtown Martinez?
Many of us have believed that downtown could again be a destination and again attract new businesses and clientele. And now, finally, all the hard work by Main Street Martinez, the City of Martinez, the Chamber, arts groups and businesses has finally been realized. Now we are experiencing the excitement of watching the downtown take shape and become a more vibrant place with thriving businesses.
It is so great to see the revitalized and remodeled buildings and the new businesses that have opened in the past few months. Every week, I receive emails or phone calls from people who want to locate a business here. They have heard the buzz about our progress and they want to be a part of it!
A healthy downtown is an indicator of community economic health. A thriving downtown is something everyone in the community can take pride in. They brag to their friends and family and want to bring them downtown to show them what a great place it has become.
If you have time, look at local real estate listings, almost always they include images of downtown, and mention the history, and charm that exists downtown as a reason to purchase or lease a home here. Realtors have always known the importance of a healthy, thriving downtown when it comes to home values.
Downtown rehabilitation work stimulates the local economy. Labor and materials for the earthquake retrofit work and building rehabilitation are very often from businesses within the city.
Local businesses support the community, schools, and sports teams. And, for every $100 spent at a local business, $68 stays in the community vs. $43 for every $100 spent at a non-local business.
Downtown is the heart of the city. It is where the community gathers, enjoys parades, and other community events.
Downtown and city history can attract tourism. And downtown is where arts and culture thrive.
